When the first Lynx XM30 prototype is delivered, the U.S. Army will get its first physical look at a vehicle that will define the next generation of mechanized combat operations. Its arrival will bring decades of U.S.-based engineering and manufacturing together in a ground combat solution developed specifically for the Army’s future requirements.
Behind the vehicle stands the strength and depth of Team Lynx’s American industrial network, led by American Rheinmetall and spanning Textron Systems, Raytheon, L3Harris Technologies, Allison Transmission, and Anduril Industries. Together, with input from American Soldiers, the companies are building the XM30 in America by American workers for the Soldiers who will rely on it.
Their investments in U.S. facilities, suppliers and production capacity are also strengthening the Defense Industrial Base, building the capacity needed to produce and support the Lynx XM30 over time.
Built Through an American Production Network
Ahead of delivery to the Army, prototype production advanced through a coordinated network of U.S. facilities, bringing together specialized manufacturing and testing capabilities from across the American Defense Industrial Base. Textron Systems integrated the hull and chassis at its facility in Slidell, Louisiana, while precision turret fabrication was completed in Plymouth, Michigan, where both major sub-assemblies were joined.
Together, those facilities already cover the principal stages required to build and test Lynx XM30 vehicles and prepare them for delivery, giving Team Lynx a production sequence it can repeat and expand when the Army advances the program.
“Readiness is everything,” said Jason Atkinson, Operating Executive of American Rheinmetall. “We’ve invested heavily upfront so that when we reach production phases, we can surge and backstop a vendor if needed. Every aspect of our strategy is designed to avoid single points of failure. Whether it’s in materials sourcing or manufacturing capabilities, we’re structured to flex and respond.”
Specialized American Capabilities, Integrated into One Vehicle
On today’s battlefield, a combat vehicle must support a growing network of power-dependent sensors, communications, computing and software. Its effectiveness depends on how well those capabilities operate alongside armor, mobility, and firepower as one fighting system.
Bringing those systems together in one vehicle starts with how the Lynx XM30 is built. As Team Lynx’s manufacturing partner, Textron Systems draws on more than 50 years of combat-vehicle production experience to build and integrate the vehicle’s core structure at its Slidell facility and establish a streamlined, repeatable process that can support production and long-term sustainment. Its digital manufacturing system carries engineering requirements and work instructions onto the factory floor, while automation, weld-validation tooling and integrated quality controls prepare the build process to scale beyond the prototype phase. A $7.5 million investment has also expanded the facility’s fabrication and outfitting capabilities for the program.
Inside the integrated hull, the Lynx XM30’s sensors, communications and onboard computing depend on a propulsion system that can move the vehicle while meeting a far greater electrical load than legacy platforms were designed to carry. Allison Transmission’s eGen Force™ hybrid transmission provides the propulsion and electrical power needed to support those systems, with design, development and production anchored at its established defense operation in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, today’s force-protection and hunter-killer missions require real-time situational awareness and the ability to identify threats at range while stationary or on the move. L3Harris Technologies’ WESCAM MX-GCS B gives the gunner and commander stabilized electro-optical and infrared imagery, preserving a clear sight picture through vibration, dust and smoke and reducing the time needed to detect and identify threats.
When threats remain beyond the line of sight, however, Raytheon’s Multi-Mission Launcher enables ISR-capable effectors that can search, identify, and strike before those threats are directly visible to the crew. Its software-driven architecture also equips the launcher with a common fire system capable of launching multiple effectors without a major physical redesign. Crews can tailor their loadout to match mission needs, combining precision anti-armor weapons with long-range munitions or collaborative unmanned systems. The adaptability allows formations to shift from defense to offense faster, respond to emerging threats, and maintain overmatch across the battlespace.
But even with the ability to engage from farther away, with a tailored loadout, modern combat vehicles collect more information than a crew can realistically process. The influx of data from battlefield networks, drone feeds, threat warning systems, and active protection suites force the crew to manage massive amounts of information simultaneously under high-stress conditions. As a result, cognitive overload quickly sets in, reducing situational awareness and decision-making abilities— a deadly combination in the long heat of battle. But Anduril’s Common Tactical Picture removes that burden by fusing data from multiple sensors on and off the vehicle into a single, intuitive display, giving Soldiers a coherent view of the battlefield so they can identify threats and act in seconds instead of minutes.
No matter how advanced each partner’s technology is, none can protect the Soldier unless each works cohesively with every other system in the vehicle. Gaps in integration can compromise performance and put crews at risk. That makes American Rheinmetall’s role critical. As lead systems integrator, the company draws on Rheinmetall’s combat-vehicle experience and long history of collaborating with partners to turn each Team Lynx partner’s contribution into one unified fighting system.
Matt Warnick, CEO of American Rheinmetall, described the result of that integration: “Together, we’re building a combat system that’s greater than the sum of its parts.”
Strengthening the Defense Industrial Base
The industrial network behind Team Lynx reaches well beyond its principal partners. American Rheinmetall is working directly with Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers across the United States to expand production capacity and accelerate the adoption of advanced materials. These relationships give smaller suppliers access to manufacturing expertise and investment that can help them compete for defense work, broadening the domestic supplier base supporting the Lynx XM30 while building capacity for future U.S. defense needs.
“The future of U.S. national security depends on a defense industrial base that is robust, adaptable, and strategically aligned with the demands of modern warfare,” said Warnick. “Every dollar we invest flows through American jobs, new supplier entrants, and greater production readiness.”
American Rheinmetall has also committed substantial private capital before production demand arrives. Before the XM30 competition began, the company had already invested more than $40 million in engineering talent and infrastructure. Rheinmetall’s acquisition of Loc Performance Products later added nearly two million square feet of advanced manufacturing space and more than 1,000 skilled employees with experience supporting U.S. combat vehicles, expanding the domestic manufacturing capacity available to the Lynx XM30 program.
“This is what a responsive industrial base looks like, one that’s ready before the requirement arrives,” said Warnick. “We don’t wait for government R&D dollars to start moving. We invest first because that’s how we get capability to the Soldier faster.”
